Welcome to Cave Rock

Cave Rock, East Shore Lake Tahoe, Nevada is located between Zephyr Cove and Glenbrook and is one of the most recognized landmarks at Lake Tahoe. It was formed about 5 million years ago as a volcanic vent. The name comes from the small caves on the west side, which were cut by waves when the lake was 140 feet higher during the ice ages. Tahoe Tessie, the lake’s version of the Loch Ness monster, is reputed to live in a cavern below the impressive outcropping. The site is considered to be a holy spot for the native Washoe Indians who put their deceased to rest in the cold waters below the outcropping. One of the reasons the Washoe considered Cave Rock sacred was what they called “The Lady of the Lake”. The “Lady” appears in the rock formation as the profile of a woman’s face gazing out toward the lake. She is best viewed by boat from north of the rock, close in to shore, and in the morning or early afternoon hours. This land is currently under the protection of the US Forest Service.

The homes in the Cave Rock area receive plenty of sun and have breathtaking panoramic views of the Lake Tahoe shores.

In the early 1960’s a group of developers subdivided their land into approximately 110 properties, ranging in size from about 1/3 acre to just over a full acre. Being adjacent to the historic Cave Rock, they named their development Cave Rock Estates. Although a number of the parcels have been acquired by public entities, including the US Forest Service, the State of Nevada, and Douglas County, about eighty properties remain in private ownership.

Being roughly in the middle of the eastern shore of Lake Tahoe, and literally right above the waterfront, these mountain homeowners enjoy some of the most spectacular views of the whole lake and the entire range of the Sierra mountains across the western horizon! During the peak of 2006, it was rare to find a home within this neighborhood that was valued at less than a million dollars. Most are spacious and contemporary.

At the base of Cave Rock Estates is a very nice State Park with a lakefront picnic ground with picnic tables complete with fire pits and barbecues, a small sandy beach, a boat launch for watercraft of all sizes, comfort station and parking lot. The steep shoreline and rocky shoals make this area a good location for rainbow trout fishing.

This community also enjoys 6 minute access south to excellent schools and playgrounds plus a great library, the famous Zephyr Cove Lodge with swimable beaches, boat & horseback riding plus stern-wheeler and tri-maran excursions across the Lake. Another 3 minutes brings on to a fine Mall w/grocery, restaurants, Post Office, a fire station and other shops. Another 3 minutes brings one to Tahoe’s best Casino/Hotels, first-class entertainment, ski-lifts, ice-skating, spectacular Edgewood Golf Course and many restaurants.
